The first sighting of the Caribbean island of Saba never fails to fascinate. Like a lonely and unspoiled queen, Saba steeply emerges from the deep blue seas, shining like a dark green emerald and joining the skies among passing clouds. Those who approach the tiny, 13 square kilometer island by plane will never forget their breathtaking landing on the top of a volcanic rock plunging straight into the sea.
Located at 17°38' latitude North and 63°13' longitude West, Saba is a steep, volcanic island, with its highest peak, Mount Scenery, reaching an altitude of 877 meters.Since October 10th 2010, Saba is a Public Entity of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Funny to say, this smallest and highest island of the Dutch West-Indies is also the most elevated point of the Kingdom of the Netherlands! Its shoreline is rocky, lined by impressive cliffs. The whole volcanic island is covered by lush, tropical forests, a delight for eco-travelers, hikers, bird watchers and nature lover, still looking for an unspoiled paradise on earth.
Such a paradise also extends to Saba's underwater world: Surrounded by a National Marine Park teaming with tropical fish life, sponges and corals, the island counts among the top diving destinations in the Caribbean, and even the world. Not surprisingly, diving is the most important activity practiced on Saba by visitors and tourists. And of course, such rich waters make for great fish and lobster dinners at the island's restaurants. Find more information about diving in our section "Activities"
The hardly 1400 inhabitants of the island firmly intend to protect their unspoiled queen. Thus, be not surprised if you won't find casinos, shopping malls, discos or high raise hotels on Saba. Visitors will enjoy their stay in small or middle-sized, but well equipped, sometimes even luxurious hotels, lodges, guesthouses and typical West-Indian cottages. As for Real Estate, Saba has beautiful villas and houses for sale, at prices that haven't skyrocketed yet. Click on our section "Real Estate" for more information.
Saba is a prime and nearly secret destination for nature lovers, sportive people, divers and visitors looking for a restful vacation in quiet surroundings, away from mass tourism and the hassle of our modern world. And you won't find any traffic jam on the island's few mountainous roads. The "Unspoiled Queen" welcomes you under her emerald and turquoise mantle, and so do her still unspoiled subjects. We wish you a happy and healthy vacation on Saba.
