Antigua and Barbuda - Cricket: A national Passion

Information Pages

Do you love cricket? With its renowned team of the West-Indies, cricket is part of the history of the Caribbean, and Antigua is one of the best places in the world to enjoy it. Not surprisingly, Antigua hosted several matches during the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2007.

If you want to get acquainted with cricket, come to us and we will show you what it is about. The best is to head for the "STICKY WICKET", one of Antigua's hot spot near the airport. It's much more than a restaurant and bar: the place is a cricket institution and the heart of cricket culture in Antigua. Its "Hall of Fame" exhibits 12 bronze bas-relief sculptures of the greatest West Indian cricket player, with biographical information about each of them.

Cricket is Antigua's national sport and our country has produced some of the most famous cricket heroes in the world: Viviane Richards, one of the most famous batsman and former captain of the West-Indies Cricket Team; Andy Roberts, a highly distinguished fast bowler; Richie Richardson, a batman of great renown, and Curtly Ambrose, fast bowler on the West-Indian team. The"Sticky Wicket" is filled with photos and souvenirs of the great cricket matches that took place on the ground. The best of all is of course the adjacent Standford cricket ground, where games can be watched while sitting on the restaurant terrace. The ground can also host night games.

Antigua Recreation Ground and the new Vivian Richards Stadium are other places where Test Matches with the team of the West-Indies usually take place. If you are lucky enough and a cricket match takes place during your visit, go for it, and discover what makes Antiguan hearts beat!
