As in gastronomy, St. Maarten/St.Martin is on top of the list when it comes to entertainment in the Caribbean. Nowhere else in the region will you find such intense and varied nightlife: cocktail bars, discos, piano bars and late night beach bars spread all over the island. Every pleasure is available, from casinos to adult entertainment night clubs, as long as you can keep up with the pace!
On the Dutch side, the surroundings of the airport and Maho beach are a main nightlife spot, with the most famous open air disco of the island offering fun in a sophisticated ambiance until early hours in
the morning. But fun already starts at noon at the next door beach bars, where the low flying, incoming jumbo jets and airbus provide a surge of adrenaline to guests insisting on seeing the belly of the plane! Several more discos and night bars makes this area a favorite entertainment spot for American tourists.
The Simpson Bay area, on the other side of the International Princess Juliana Airport, is another favorite hot spot, with entertainment available for every taste. Squeezed between the open sea and the lagoon with countless bars, restaurants, nightclubs, casinos and movie theaters, Simpson Bay attracts party lovers all night long.
The beach promenade in Philipsburg, called Boardwalk, is a great place for sundowners, ideal to enjoy happy hours - two drinks for the price of one - in one of the numerous beach bars along the bay. This is a privileged spot for public cultural events, with bands and dancers performing often until late in the night.
Carnival on the Dutch side is one of the most famous in the Caribbean, with partying going on day and night for at least three weeks: An event that takes place in April and shouldn't be missed, if you are lucky to be in St. Maarten. It includes street festivities, "jump up's", calypso concerts and other musical events and of course, big parades. It ends around the first of May and the Queen's Birthday. Carnival in St. Maarten is an endless party time, so if entertainment is important to you, the last weeks of April are a great moment to visit our island.
On the French side, nightlife and general entertainment takes place mainly in Marigot, Orient Bay and Grand Case. During tourist season, the main street of Grand Case is once a week transformed into a pedestrian zone, and music bands walk along the road while visitors enjoy the several beach bars and restaurants. Please look at our slide show about the "Harmony Nights" in Grand Case. But all year round, you can enjoy music bands at several beach bars and restaurants while sipping your happy hour cocktail or late night drink. On the road next to Grand Case, check out the new commercial center "Hope Estate", that offers increasing night entertainment.
In Marigot, it's all about rhythm and dancing in mainly Latin discos. Make sure to refresh your salsa steps before you get into it. Of course, since this is France, expect to see a lot of beautiful people in haute couture enjoying champagne at elegant lounges and cocktail bars along the "Marina La Royale".Furthermore, many publicly organized party events and concerts attract all kind of night folk to the beautiful water front, called " Front de Mer".
And finally, if you enjoy fresh air, the best place is Orient Bay, the most "chic" beach in the Caribbean. Here, several sophisticated discos and bars offer the best sound under the stars. All of them host lots of concerts all over the year, with music from salsa to techno on the most crazy stretch of sand of the island. There is more than enough entertainment to choose from in St. Maarten/St. Martin. The only requisite: To be fit!
