CAYMAN ISLANDS
 |
The first thing people think when they hear the name of the Caribbean Cayman Islands is "that's where the rich and famous hide their money"! And yes, the Cayman Islands are famous for their offshore banking, and the financial sector is the greatest source of revenue for the three islands, called Gran Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Added to finances, tourism is the second source of revenue, but the former allows the islands to be choosy when it comes to the latter. This means that, apart of the cruise ship visitors, the Cayman authorities keep a strict control on immigration, and holiday makers should prepare to spend some real money. The Cayman's aren't cheap. But then again, most of the hotels are top class or at least, very comfortable.

The Cayman Islands are a British Oversea Territory, located west of Jamaica and South of Cuba. People speak English and use the Cayman Island dollar and the USD. The capital George Town is located on Grand Cayman: there you will find banks and boutiques, but not much night life. It mainly happens on Seven-Mile-Beach, the great attraction of Gran Cayman: An endless white sand beach along a perfectly transparent sea,, lined by most of the hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and boutiques.
In other parts of Gran Cayman, there are some attractions too, like the turtle farm, and a geological formation called "Hell".

Scuba diving is for sure the main tourist attraction of the Cayman Islands. Pristine waters with an amazing visibility, great wrecks, walls and a fantastic fish and sea life attract every year a huge diver crowd from all over the world. Each of the three islands has its special dive sites. Famous are the walls on Little Cayman, caves in Cayman Brac, and Stingray City on Gran Cayman. And dive packages are not especially expensive, as long as you are not tempted by all the luxury around you. And just snorkeling is also great! |

The three islands are very small, the biggest one being Gran Cayman. Don't expect tropical forests, but they are some natural attractions. If you are a diver, then Cayman Islands is a most once in your scuba life. And if you have a good amount of money to spend, you will get everything you can desire under the tropical sky. Restaurants are expensive, and alcohol prices are prohibitive: Check the amount of bottles you can import if you plan to do so, it is very limited. You will find great supermarkets filled with American products, but again, not cheap. Little Cayman is ideal for divers who only want to enjoy the underwater world and can live without the mundane atmosphere on Seven-Mile-Beach. If you are a scuba freak and prepare your stay well, you can have a great dive trip without spending that much. And if you are rich, well, just go and enjoy high-life! |
