Sint Maarten / Saint Martin - Beaches

Information Pages

Great Bay Beach Phillipsburg St.MaartenThe more than 30 beaches on St.Maarten/St. Martin are among the most beautiful in the Caribbean. Most of them offer the dazzling contrast between amazing stretches of white sand and turquoise waters. Some beaches are lined with cliffs; a few are very secretive since they can only be reached by boat. Usually, the waters are calmer on the Caribbean side, while you can expect some more surf on the Atlantic side beaches. The island really looks like an atoll, surrounded at many places by coral reefs near to shore. These reefs are teaming with tropical fish, a paradise for diving and snorkeling.

Orient BeachNeedless to say, in St.Maarten/St. Martin everyone can find one's dream beach. If you are the romantic type who wants to get away from the crowds, there is no lack of secluded beaches surrounded by tropical flowers with no beach bar in view. Other beaches reflect the cosmopolitan, sophisticated lifestyle of the island. Orient Beach, on the French side, is usually called the St.Tropez of the Caribbean. Here, French lifestyle is a must! Topless sunbathing is frequent - like everywhere on the French side - and a part of Orient Beach is dedicated to naturist sun seekers. You won"t miss anything here: transparent warm waters, beach bars and fine restaurants, cocktails on your beach chair in the sand and all types of water sports. This is a beach to see and to be seen.

Baie Longue Saint MartinOn Baie Longue on the French side, you can join the rich and famous clients of the island"s most luxurious hotel/resort, "La Samanna". On Great Bay in Philipsburg, cruise ship guests enjoy the numerous bars and restaurants along the Boardwalk. Le Galion beach is great for families and windsurfing. Baie Rouge is a discreet beach surrounded by lush hills, a great spot for surfing and snorkeling. Cupecoy Beach is a narrow and quite hidden strip of golden sand fringed by spectacular cliffs. Friar"s Bay is famous for its full moon parties. And, the small palm fringed Happy Bay nearby, is only available by boat. So are the small offshore islets of Tintamarre, Green Cay and Pinel.

Dawn Beach Saint MartinDawn Beach and Coralita are great for snorkeling. And Maho Bay is the place to go for a rush of adrenaline, while incoming planes fly in just a bit over your head! Baie Rouge in the French Lowlands has a rich underwater life, and offers several beach bars with good and decently priced food. Sometimes, the waters here can be rough, but then, most of the beach is nearly always empty: a good place for people in search of peace and nature!

Baie RougeIn April 2011, the famous magazine "Caribbean Travel and Life" has rated St. Martin in 6th position among the top Caribbean beaches. Orient Beach was described as the island's "best known jewel", while Cupecoy Beach was mentioned for its dramatic limestone cliffs. Baie de Petite Cayes - only reached by walking from Friar's Bay -, is seen as the"jackpot for solitude", while Grand Case impressed as "the planet's most impressive line-up of seaside eateries". No doubt there: If you look for great beaches, you can't go wrong visitng St. Martin!

Happy Bay St. MartinAll beaches on the island are public and some are part of a nature preserve, where motorized water sports are limited to certain areas. With water temperatures between 26 and 30 degree Celsius, you will hardly catch a cold. There are many more beaches on the island, but we will leave to our visitors the pleasure to discover them.
