The island of Barbados is located in the South of the Eastern Caribbean island chain, although it actually lays in Atlantic waters. Member of the British Commonwealth and former British Colony, Barbados conserves lots of British traditions and thus attracts many British visitors, often even Royalty. A holiday in Barbados doesn't come cheap, and drinks come at a price. Then again, the authorities make sure visitors can spend their holidays in peace and security. Immigration policy is strict, and you should behave in accordance of the conservative morals and lifestyle of Barbados Society. During colonial times, Barbados brought not only slaves but many indentured labor to the island - especially from Asia, its population is now very mixed. Barbados is one of the most developed island in the region with a relatively high standard of living. Something visitors are usually grateful for!

Barbados is a rather flat island. Its capital is called Bridgetown.The best beaches are located South and West of the island, where the water is transparent and calm. On those beautiful beaches, you will find most of the big hotels. On the Atlantic side - the East Coast - the sea is more rough and often perfect for surfing. Traveling around is quite easy, since there is a decent public transportation system on the island.Car rental is no problem. The international airport receives many flights from different countries - Europe and the USA - and is a kind of hub for flights to other Caribbean destinations.

Barbados has many renown international hotels and smaller ones, all generally reaching from luxury to comfortable. The island also has time-share units available. There are lots of first class restaurants, but due to the cultural mix on the island, it won't be hard to find more economical Chinese or Indian gastronomy.

Barbados offers good shopping, often luxury goods and duty-free, as well as excellent supermarkets. And hotels and bars provide for a varied entertainment scene. A huge, carnival-like festival takes place in July/August, there are many events scheduled over the year, and Barbados has produced excellent, sometimes world famous musicians, like singer Rihanna.

There are many places to go if you look for interesting excursions. Historical sites, plantations,museums, old churches, wildlife reserves and cave exploration are a good alternative to just sitting on the beach. You can also practice many sports like diving, windsurfing and more. And Barbados is a good place for you if you are a fan of cricket, a British sport per excellence. In short, Barbados is not an economic tourist place,but it makes a good family vacation spot if you like beach and some interesting attractions. And if you can afford a luxurious romantic getaway, then you will find what you are looking for in Barbados.
