St.Maarten/St. Martin is blessed with a huge amount of artists in every field, but often visitors and even residents do not realize that. Thanks to Porto Cupecoy, this will certainly change now. With "Arts in the Plaza", Porto Cupecoy is now giving performing artists, painters, sculptors and musicians a platform to present their artistic skills. More: this monthly event, that started on the 22th of December 2010, makes it very easy for island's visitors and residents to discover the surprising variety and quality of artists living and working in our multicultural society.
Porto Cupecoy has put together a prestigious curator committee in order to select the participating artists. Among those personalities are Clara Reyes, founder of Imbali Center for Dance and Creative Movement, the painter Roland Richardson and Thierry Gumbs, French St. Martin's Director of Culture.
The first event on the 22th of December attracted a huge public: Around 600 people congregated around the fountain of the beautiful, Mediterranean style plaza. Christmas decoration, open boutiques, prestigious restaurants and terraces, not to forget the full moon over the marina transformed Porto Cupecoy in a romantic stage for performances and arts. Never before had our island attracted such a congregation of arts lovers. For sure, the specials offered by the restaurants played their part in the successful evening
In addition to exhibits by already famous and innovative avant-garde painters and sculptors, the three stages and sometimes the whole plaza presented a three hour program, including: Stilts walkers and impersonator, Drums, Griot sings, Caribbean dances and folk songs, Christmas songs, Gwoka dance and drum, Flamenco and Indian Dance, Modern dance, Salsa,Capoeira, South African gumboot dance, fire dancer and French Cancan, music bands and lovely children's ballet performances. Imbali dancers, SXM Dance Theater and Motion Dance school choreographed many of the performances.
The next "Arts in the Plaza" event takes place on the 26th of January 2011, from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm in Porto Cupecoy. This page will keep you informed about what's happening at Arts in the Plaza.
