Sint Maarten / Saint Martin - A Gentleman and his Coat

Men in business dress
Lady Ruby has done it again: After "The Lady and her Dress",renown artist Ruby Bute presented on the 20th of March at her Silk Cotton Tree Art Gallery "A Gentleman and his Coat". This time, especially the ladies among the more than 150 persons were rewarded with the view of good looking and handsome island men performing a very special fashion show. And the men within the public...well, they may have gotten some ideas about how to dress to please their wives! This was again one of those lovely evenings in Frairs Bay, in which Ruby and her assistant Marian Jno Finn managed to put on stage island residents from many cultures.

None of them were professionals and yet: They all looked great presenting fashions and dress styles, from sportive to elegant, including clothing from different cultures to be found in St.Maarten/St. Martin. The evening started with an Antillean drum band, and was followed by the appearance of the nearly naked "bush man", gradually becoming the modern business man while discovering the use of clothing. After that, the sportive men showed us the variety of sports being practiced on the island.

The sportive section was followed by the creative one: A very funny presentation of original costumes, put together by the performers themselves. There was no limit to creativity, and for sure, some of this attires would look very funny and attractive on the street.

Finally, all those handsome men showed modern, elegant fashion, reflecting somehow their personality and the many cultural backgrounds of our island's people.

Men with singer

Finally, they all performed a really funny - and quiet erotic - choreography around the star singer of the evening, Lena Browne, who entertained the public with great songs and her beautiful voice. And while judges voted the best dressed man - resulting to be Elton Jones - , Clara Reyes of Imbali Center entertained the enthusiastic public with one of her amazing Afro-dance presentation.

Men on stage dancing
It always seems a miracle to see how Ruby Bute manages to bring together people from different backgrounds and cultures, mostly without performing experience, and put them on stage in a most creative and funny way. Really, our island is not short of talents, and it just takes artistic minded people to make something out of it. After this great evening, we wonder what Ruby will invent next: We will keep you informed, as soon as she shares the secret with us!
