Since Saturday May 7th, Philipsburg has a new art gallery, one more attraction which will invite visitors and residents to spend some time in one of the most charming corner of Front Street. The name is "Sheer Gallery", yes, like the fine dining restaurant Sheer, since the gallery actually is located on its premises and belongs to Sheer's owner Valentin Davis. As a big art lover, Valentin decided to combine art and haute cuisine.. And why not: After all, as Governor Eugene Holiday noticed at the inauguration, good cuisine is also an art!
Many art loving personalities from both sides of the island met on Saturday night, to inaugurate the gallery and its first exhibition: A great selection of works by famous island painter Ronald Richardson. After Valentin said a few words about his new gallery, Ronald Richardson welcomed the public, and then the gallery was opened by Valentin's lovely little daughter.
Ronald Richardson's work is world famous and has been exposed in many international art galleries. The painter is often called the represent ant of Caribbean Impressionism. And although he is also known as the painter of the flamboyant tree, Richardson has created many other paintings and charcoals, mostly showing aspects of our beautiful island. He received the prestigious award "Knight in the order of Orange Nassau from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, as well as the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the French government. Mostly painting outside, Richardson introduced the light of the Caribbean to the world. Several of his art works can now be admired at Sheer's gallery.
And of course, another award winner, Sheer's chef Dave Trotman delighted the inauguration public with his "tapas", accompanied by the excellent wines of Sheer's famous "Cave de Josianne". Furthermore, guests could enjoy a special haute cuisine dinner at a special price.
We can only wish Valentin all the best with his restaurant and art gallery, and hope to see many more island artists's exhibitions at Sheer.
